Acro Storm
I managed to try Acro Storm, a futuristic airbike racing game, and it left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I’m a sucker for the theme – it’s like Wipeout or F-Zero on a tabletop, with slick sci-fi bikes and a modular track. The first couple of races were pretty fun as we got to know the course and cards, and the game is easy to pick up and play. Unfortunately, after those initial plays, we realized there just isn’t a lot underneath the hood. The strategies we tried didn’t seem to matter much; it mostly came down to luck of the draw and some dice rolls for speed. There’s not a lot of depth or variation in the gameplay, so it started feeling “solved” and repetitive almost immediately. We also noticed some balance issues – a few upgrades felt obviously better, and being in the lead is hard to overcome without a rubber-banding mechanism. I will say the components are neat and the idea of a high-speed racing board game still appeals to me, but Acro Storm didn’t hold our interest for long. It ended up being a novelty we played a handful of times before moving on.
✓ Pros
- • Cool and unique futuristic racing theme (feels like F-Zero on the tabletop)
- • Easy to learn rules and quick to get a game started
- • Visually impressive components and track design for an indie game
✗ Cons
- • Very shallow gameplay – not much strategic depth or variety
- • Balance issues with upgrades and lack of catch-up mechanisms
- • Limited replayability – gets repetitive after only a few plays
