Adrenaline
Adrenaline is basically a first-person shooter deathmatch turned into a board game, and as a longtime video gamer, I find it a blast (literally). It’s surprisingly clever: there are no dice, so hitting someone is deterministic – instead the game focuses on managing your ammo and timing your shots for maximum points. The array of crazy weapons – from railguns to plasma rifles – all have unique effects that actually make sense with their theme. The designers did an awesome job translating FPS concepts like respawning and power-ups into board game mechanics. Most importantly, it’s just fun. Running around the map, grabbing ammo, and blasting friends never gets old, and turns are fast so there’s very little downtime. Now, Adrenaline isn’t super deep – one of my buddies calls it a “dumb fun” game, and I don’t disagree. It’s more about tactics and adapting to who’s wounded than long-term strategy or engine building. We did notice that with five players (the max) it can stretch a bit long for what it is, and with only 2-3 players the arena can feel a bit empty. But if everyone comes in with a beer-and-pretzels mindset, Adrenaline reliably delivers a fast and furious good time.
✓ Pros
- • Captures the feel of a fast-paced FPS video game remarkably well
- • Innovative no-dice combat – damage and kills are based on strategy, not luck
- • Wide variety of fun, thematic weapons and quick, simultaneous turns keep players engaged
✗ Cons
- • Not much strategic depth – more of a “run and gun” tactical skirmish
- • Can run a bit long with max players given its lightweight nature
- • Less exciting with 2-3 players (needs more targets on the map for full experience)
