About the Game

The Dwarven King has issued an order to the houses of each clan. It is imperative to reclaim Karrak-cüm-Kazar, the sacred mountain, ancestral home of the Dwarves since the first Age of the Beard. Covenant

I played an early copy of Covenant, and as a fantasy Euro-game fan, I was in dwarf-heaven. This game is all about sending your clan of dwarves on missions to reclaim their mountain home, and it delivers combo-filled goodness. On my turn I might dig into the mountain, which gives me gems that let me forge a weapon, which then helps me slay a monster – the way actions cascade into each other is super satisfying. By the second round, I was deeply engrossed in plotting out long chains of moves and it felt amazing when a plan came together. Covenant is definitely on the heavier side, and my first play had my head spinning at times with all the options. One of my friends took a bit long on turns trying to maximize every combo, so analysis paralysis can creep in. Also, while the dwarf theme is cool and the artwork is lovely, the gameplay is still very much classic Euro optimization – not a lot of storytelling beyond the flavor text. For me though, that’s fine, because the mechanics are engaging. So far, I’d give Covenant around an 8.5 out of 10.

✓ Pros

  • Rich combo-chain gameplay with multiple strategies
  • Streamlined design despite being a heavy Euro
  • Beautiful production and thematic fantasy setting

✗ Cons

  • Complex rules can overwhelm at first
  • Prone to analysis paralysis with thoughtful players
  • Theme is light; feels more like a pure strategy puzzle
